Following attempts to curb over-tourism in 2019, international tourism has been hard hit by COVID-19, with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) predicting that the global travel industry will fall by 60% in 2020 and possibly 80% in the event of a second wave of the virus.
But such is the transformational power of Instagram on global travel. The social media platform, which was founded in 2010, now boasts over a billion users, 500 million of which are active on it every day. Alongside food and fashion, travel images make up some of its most popular content; influencers can whip up massive followings, which they can earn big fees from.
Christina Tan (@sassychris1) is a Luxury Travel photographer with an extensive global passport. She previously worked in the fashion industry, and with that career path, was able to travel the world. It was in this business that she discovered her true passion: travel photography.
Having gone through restrictions, closures and bans, the global travel and tourism industry has seen some of the biggest disruption with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Along with it came cancelled plans, new ways of working and new traveller concerns.
Air travel is reported to be the most frequented mode of travel transportation in the coming year at 45% globally (24% domestic and 21% internationally). This is closely followed by car at 42%, with 39% being for domestic travel plans.
At the end of March, we took a first shot at this question by analyzing several indicators for travel demand, particularly week-over-week app download trends across various travel-related segments in China (see the full article here). We saw that China had quickly overcome the initial Covid-19 panic phase and was gradually entering recovery mode following a return of interest in travel. This was an encouraging sign. One that we hoped could apply to the global travel industry.
Two months later, we are now able to draw a much more comprehensive picture with more data at hand to outline some major future scenarios on how the travel industry might recover over the next few years. Again, we look at China to observe how travel demand has developed over the previous weeks to speculate what this might mean for the global landscape.
